Florida Divorce & Social Security Number
by Domingo from Hollywood, Florida, Broward County
Is a social security number required to file a divorce in the state of Florida?
Answer to Florida Divorce Question
Dear Domingo,
One of the required forms that must be filed along with a Petition for Dissolution of Marriage is a Notice of Social Security Number.
If there is a compelling reason that you do not have a social security number, such as you are in Florida on a temporary basis on a student or worker visa, the requirement might possibly be waived.
However, one of the parties (either you or your spouse) must be a Florida resident; and have lived in Florida for at least six months immediately prior to filing for divorce.
You can find Florida Supreme Court approved forms on the Florida Supreme Court's website at www.flcourts.org.
